Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve, Central Idaho

The preserve encompasses three major lava fields. Here you can see examples of volcanic cones, tree molds left by lava-incinerated trees and lava tubes, which look like caves.

Hoover Dam & Lake Mead

The Dam is an engineering marvel that relies on flow from the Colorado River and encompasses Lake Mead. From what we understand, snowmelt from the Colorado Rocky Mountains is the source of flow into the river. At this time, the snowmelt doesn’t appear sufficient enough to keep Lake Mead at capacity and it looks like the lake is drying up. This implies smarter water management and use in the future.

The Dam is situated between the borders of Nevada and Arizona. Power from the Dam primarily supplies power to Southern California and Los Angeles, Nevada and Arizona.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone is primarily located in Wyoming, but also extends into Montana and Idaho. We saw many Bison roaming the geothermal landscape. We also waited the 90-odd minutes to see the famous Old Faithful Geyser erupt in what can be a 30-60m eruption. Unfortunately, while we were there, Ol’ Faithful only had about 15m in him – perhaps it was the time of year.

Zion National Park, Utah

Zion encompasses many beautiful vistas of red and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone cliffs. An amazing place to explore canyons, climb big walls or even take the drive through the tunnel.
